• Oct. 2007 - Press Release - Debbie Schachner

COAST-TO-COAST HIKER NEARS CAPE HENLOPEN

Debbie Schachner, a 30 year old Catholic lay missionary from O’Fallon, Illinois, is nearing the completion of a 4,800 mile coast-to-coast backpacking adventure on the American Discovery Trail (ADT).

Starting in 2005 at Point Reyes, California, she snow shoed over the Sierra Mountains and then crossed the deserts of Nevada and Utah. In 2006, she hiked over the Rockies and reached St. Louis. This year she will complete her coast-to-coast journey.

Debbie estimates she will arrive at the ADT Trailhead at the beach at Cape Henlopen, Delaware on Oct. 19 about 2 p.m.

Debbie stated: “My primary goal as I hike is to encourage people to do more with what we have. I feel it is important to share what we have in order to lift others up. I want to motivate people to search inside themselves to find their own talents and passions, then to take action by applying those gifts to the needs they find in their community&rdquo

A second goal was to raise funds to build a library for a village in Kenya. Speaking at churches, service clubs and other groups, she succeeded in raising the $47,000 needed to build the first Phase of the library. For information on the project visit www.awefoundation.org
